While Virtual cards are very useful while physical cards are in the mail, or when a driver is on the road and needs access to your credit line or wallet funds, they do also come with some limitations.
Connecting a Virtual Card to Apple or Google Pay
Sometimes these connections are very straightforward and move smoothly without issue. Sometimes the AtoB Engineering team needs to get involved due to challenges between the systems. The most frustrating issue, though, is when the error is coming from the Apple or Google Pay side. Since these are 3rd Party vendors, AtoB does not have control or influence over the resolution time. This can cause tremendous frustration when you are on the road.
Data Transfer (No Transaction Details)
Since fueling and purchases take place on Merchant grounds, they own the data, and AtoB receives this data on a pipeline. A combination of data shared by the merchant, the card network, and the card issuer is sent to AtoB, and we add these details to your transaction data which you can then view at app.atob.com in the Transaction page.
However, sometimes this data is not sent. And this is always the case with Virtual cards. Virtual cards should be considered a temporary fix while awaiting your physical cards, and then you should move to your physical cards. Virtual cards do not capture data in the way, and this data is shared with AtoB in the same manner as transactional data from a physical card. Sometimes a physical card used at the register for a prepaid amount will also not share data, but again this is always the case with Virtual cards, and that is why AtoB frequently requests the receipt when attempting to fix the data for these transactions.
Virtual cards have a place as a tool for quickly getting access to funds in your newly opened AtoB or Partner account. However, they are stopgap and should be replaced with physical cards as soon as possible.
My credit card works seamlessly with Apple/Google Pay:
There is a difference in coding and design for Fuel Cards. It can be difficult to remember that your AtoB Fuel Card is not a standard consumer credit card and it is governed by special rules. Think of it more as a charge card. There is no revolving credit, payment of the entire balance for the billing cycle is due at the end of the billing cycle, and it is encouraged that you utilize your credit limit. This is in opposition to consumer credit cards where good credit hygiene is to only use about 30% of your credit line.
My transactions have no data!:
Check to see if you used your virtual card for those purchases. Again, virtual cards do not provide AtoB with the standard data that physical cards provide. We can make estimates for you, but if you are reporting to IFTA it is advisable to always obtain an itemized receipt from the merchant. Our tools can help, but you are still ultimately responsible for the data in your reports.
